For several years now, the reputation of livestock farming in the public opinion has slowly but steadily deteriorated, especially among those consumers who have lost all connection with the rural world.

Numerous journalistic investigations, as well as the efforts of environmental and animal rights organization,s have gradually dismantled the naïve stereotype of farming that exists in the minds of most citizens, while also calling for its return.

Almost all the milk and meat used in Italian meals comes from intensive farming, although a clear distinction from extensive farming is difficult to establish in Italy, where climate and rainfall have only allowed grazing in limited periods of the year.

A collective hostility towards farming has been shaped by prejudices, stereotypes, but also real situations, and it’s significantly impacting milk and meat consumption, leading some to adopt vegan or vegetarian diets.

In recent years, differing opinions have polarized the discussion, and the lack of dialogue has driven people into opposing and entrenched positions.

Intensive farming: how we can change course. September 15 at 5 p.m.

We discuss this topic in one of the conferences organized at the Biodiversity House.

The intensive livestock farming model that has emerged in recent decades carries an unsustainable environmental, social, and economic cost. However, changing course from intensive farming is both possible and necessary.

The need for change is becoming increasingly urgent: European regulations are tightening; consumers are more mindful of animal rights, environmental preservation, and their own health; costs of animal feed raw materials and energy are soaring. How can we initiate an environmental and ethical transition? And what alternative model to intensive farming should be pursued? We’ll discuss this by engaging experts and showcasing impactful examples of best practices suitable for medium and large-scale farming operations. Among the examples we’ll present are the Stalla Etica® project by Ruminantia, an eco-stable model without concrete created by a social cooperative in Cuneo, the case of a mountain pasture dairy milk produced in the Dolomites by a large dairy cooperative, and a farming approach that prioritizes soil health, fertility, and its relationship with human microbiota.
